"Healing isn't about going back to who you were before you got sick, it's about learning to move forward differently."
When illness or hardship enters our lives, it can feel as though the world has shifted beneath our feet. We long for the version of ourselves that existed before, the one who moved with ease, who didn’t carry the weight of fatigue, pain, or grief. It’s taken me a long time to realize that true healing is not about turning back the clock. It’s about finding new ways to live, to feel, and to express who we are in this moment.
For me and others, creativity has become that pathway forward. Art, whether through painting, poetry, music, dance, or storytelling, offers a unique language for emotions that are too intense to hold inside. It allows us to process the grief of losing who we were, the life we thought we’d have. It also allows us to find hope and create beauty from struggle. When we engage in creative expression, we are not only making art, but we are also finding ourselves again, line by line and brushstroke by brushstroke.
The Emotional Connection Between Art and Healing
Creativity is deeply tied to our emotions. A blank canvas can absorb our anger, a poem can hold our sorrow, and a melody can carry our hope. For those navigating chronic illness, chronic pain, or disabilities this connection becomes vital. Expressing feelings through art provides a safe release, lessening the weight of emotions that might otherwise remain trapped inside our bodies.
Self-expression also brings validation. It says, my story matters, my feelings matter, the way I move through the world matters. In times when illness or circumstances may strip us of control, creativity restores a sense of agency. We may not be able to control our symptoms or circumstances, but we can control the way we shape them into something meaningful, the way we process them instead of keeping them bottled up inside.
Research on Creativity and Healing
Science affirms what artists like me have always known: creativity heals. Studies in art therapy and psychology show that engaging in creative activities can:
Reduce stress and anxiety by lowering cortisol levels.
Improve mood and overall mental health.
Enhance cognitive function and memory.
Foster resilience and improve coping strategies.
Even reduce physical symptoms such as pain perception and fatigue.
For example, research published in the American Journal of Public Health reviewed over 100 studies on art and healing and found consistent evidence that artistic expression positively impacts both mental and physical health. Another study by the National Institutes of Health highlighted how writing poetry and journaling help patients process trauma, reduce depression, and improve quality of life. For those like me, living in daily pain, any reduction in pain even if it's short lived is a welcome relief.
Creativity as a Way Forward
Healing through creativity is not about producing “perfect” art. It’s about allowing yourself to be imperfect, messy, and real. The process itself, the act of putting paint on canvas, writing a raw poem, or even coloring a page is what heals.
Art probably won't be perfect if your hands hurt, are shaky, and you find it difficult to hold a brush or pen. However, there are accommodations and ways to adapt to each unique need of our bodies to help us create.
Every creative act is a declaration that you are still here, still feeling, still finding meaning. Creativity doesn’t erase pain or illness, but it reshapes the story we have about our pain and illness. It helps us process what we’ve lost instead of constantly focusing on that loss. It helps us imagine new possibilities and different pathways forward.
A Personal Invitation
If you are seeking healing, I invite you to lean into creativity in whatever form feels most natural. Pick up a brush, a pen, or an instrument. Try journaling, collage, pottery, dance, coloring, anything that calls to you. There is no right or wrong way to create.
Allow art to hold your emotions, your story, your transformation. Let it remind you that healing isn’t about going back, it’s about moving forward differently, with courage, beauty, and the gift of self-expression.
