As I sit at my desk, it suddenly occurs to me that I’ve been living with a chronic illness for a decade now. It can be challenging, but it doesn't mean you can't lead a fulfilling and productive life. As someone who has been navigating multiple diagnoses, including an autoimmune disease, all while working, I've learned a few tricks along the way. Here are my top 10 tips for working and living well with chronic illness:
Know Your Limitations: Understanding what you can and cannot do is crucial. It's okay to say no and set boundaries. Your health comes first.
Know Your Triggers: Identify what exacerbates your symptoms and try to avoid these triggers. Whether it's certain foods, stress, or environmental factors, knowing your triggers can help you manage your condition better.
Have Your Go-To Reliefs Nearby: Keep your favorite reliefs within arm's reach. Whether it's a heating pad, essential oils, or medication, having them close by can make a world of difference.
Create a Relief Kit: Assemble a kit with all your essentials. Mine includes pain relievers, a cozy blanket, herbal teas, and a good book. It's my little sanctuary when I need a break.
Prioritize Self-Care: Make self-care a non-negotiable part of your routine. Whether it's a warm bath, meditation, or a hobby you love, taking time for yourself is vital.
Ask for Accommodations at Work: Don't hesitate to request accommodations. Whether it's flexible hours, a comfortable chair, or the ability to work from home, your employer should support your needs.
Utilize FMLA: The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) can be a lifesaver. It allows you to take time off for medical reasons without fear of losing your job. Make sure you're aware of your rights.
Design Your Work and Home Spaces to Accommodate Your Needs: Create environments that support your health. Ergonomic furniture, good lighting, and a clutter-free space can make a big difference.
Schedule Your Life Around Your Body/Illnesses: Plan your day according to your energy levels. If mornings are tough, schedule important tasks for later in the day. Listen to your body and adjust accordingly.
Learn to Be Flexible: Life with chronic illness is unpredictable. Embrace flexibility and be kind to yourself when things don't go as planned. It's okay to have off days.
Living with chronic illness has taught me resilience and adaptability. While there are tough days, there are also moments of triumph and joy. By following these tips, you can create a balanced and fulfilling life despite the challenges.
